Toilet paper is optional
As many readers know, HGirl is obsessed with toilets. In every country she goes to, she has inspected and reviewed the toileting situation. India, of course, is no different.
There are two main options here in India: (1) Western-style commodes and (2) squat toilets. There are ALWAYS squat toilets. Western toilets tend to be optional. So does toilet paper.
Most toilets are equipped with a bucket, a pitcher and a water faucet. Now this does seem much more sanitary in theory. But there is no paper. HGirl realizes she is an arrogant, privileged American. But not having grown up without TP, the prospect of going without the "necessary papers" (as BMORE Ed says) is daunting.
Luckily, HGirl had a travel role of Charmin. All praise Charmin!
