Einen Aschenbecher, bitte
Our heroine was finally joined by her galpal (papilloma girl aka p-girl). Although she was on the red-eye from boston, p-girl was ready to go after a shower.
First stop: p-girl needed sustenance in the form of a kebap from one of the many street stands. note, vienna has really good street food.
the pair started at schottenring to begin their tour of the ringstrasse. all was fine, despite being a bit turned around. oh, and p-girl was almost hit by the s-banh (street trolley). not paying attention!
anyways, they checked out the rathaus (city hall - ok, so not sure if "rat" means rat, but rat house is an appropriate name for city hall in nyc) and parlament. They actually walked into parlament and walked right back out when they realized it was actually the government.
aside: our heroine has seen the word "fährt" a lot. now apparently this means "time." but being a bevis and buthead fan, our heroine giggles every time she sees it. there are signs that say "guten fährt," and she thinks good fart. so does farting fährt mean fart time? when is fart time?
ok, back to the events of the day. our heroine and p-girl then went to leopold museum to see the klimts. and they were fabulous (death and life was the best). but they also saw two artists they had never seen before: schiele and hammerstiel. of interest to the "public health types": schiele's father died of syphilis and schiele died in 1918 during the flu pandemic. hammerstiel is still alive. his work had a lot of undefined human forms and a few paintings were set in new york.
after leopold museum, the pair headed to Schmetterlingshaus (butterfly house) and then into the inner stradt. after looking at the shops and buying some chocolate from a franciscan monk and asked for directions to Michaelerplatz (he misunderstoon them and said, "no, i am franciscan"), they headed to Michaelerkirche (st. michael's church).
by this point they were starving, so they went to a beisl (wood panelled beer haus). p-girl had weiner schnitzel (not a hotdog, but a HUGE breaded veal cutlet) and our heroine had tafelspitz mit g'röste (boiled beef with apple/horseradish sauce). yummy.
our heroine was trying to use her german to get the check, so asked the waiter: "Einen Aschenbecher, bitte." he said "ok" and just looked at her. she asked again and he put the ashtray in front of her. she asked for the ashtray, not the bill. when she looked at her guide book, she realized she should have said "zahlen, bitte." p-girl started laughing and knocked over her water, and then the waiter started laughing at both of them.
the pair ended their night at hotel sacher, where p-girl had the original sacher torte. but they didn't ask for an ashtray...
tomorrow's itinerary: bratislava and a mozart concert.
